Renting a car is a great way to get around on your vacation or business trip. It saves you the hassle of having to depend on public transportation or spend a lot of money on expensive taxis or car services to and from your destination. Renting a car can be an excellent and affordable option if you make sure to avoid the extra costs and fees. Here are three things you can do to cut down on your rental car expenses.
Return it on time
Many rental car companies will charge you for an extra day if you return the car past the scheduled time. They might have other bookings and other people waiting on the car so there is usually a fee or a sizable charge for the extra time you keep it for. If you know you are going to be late, be sure to call the company in advance to let them know – they might be able to give you a little extra time as a courtesy.
Fill up the tank yourself
One of the biggest charges for rentals is the expense of having the rental company fill up the tank with gas once you return it. The price of gas through the company is usually much, much higher than the average price of gas in any given location. Be sure to fill the tank up yourself before you return it in order to avoid paying these exorbitant prices.
Use your own insurance
Buying additional insurance through rental car companies is an extra expense that you can avoid by having your own car insurance. Many credit card companies charge a nominal fee for rental car insurance so you will end up paying $50 – $75 instead of the daily charge that rental companies tack on to your bill. Be sure to research what is covered by other forms of car insurance before you sign up for them, however. You want to make sure you are fully covered in the event of a collision or other kinds of damage to the car.
