Renting a car can be a slightly different process depending on where you’re located. Many states and countries have age restrictions for renting. For example, some states require drivers to be over the age of 25. Other states will allow drivers under 25 to rent cars but will charge an additional fee for them.
Because drivers under 25 have been shown to get into more auto accidents than other age groups, car rental agencies want to offset the cost of potential damage. Most car rental agencies, such as Advantage, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty, allow drivers between 21 and 24 to rent cars at most locations with a fixed surcharge. It’s a good idea to compare fees and restrictions depending on where you are planning to rent a car.
Using a car broker can be a great way to quickly and easily aggregate your car rental options in order to see which companies offer the best deals for young drivers. Drivers from 18 to 21 are prohibited from renting in most states but there are a few exceptions, such as New York and Michigan. But again, there can be a sizeable fee associated with these rentals so be sure to ask upfront!
