Planning a trip to Ireland this year? You’re in for a treat! The country is known for being one of the most beautiful in the world and for having wonderfully friendly people! You’re sure to make new friends and experience some amazing sights and adventures.
Renting a car is one of the best ways to see the country because you can explore both the cities and some of the off-the-beaten-path countryside settings. Here are some safety tips for you to keep in mind when driving in Ireland.
Get the Proper License
First, make sure you’re properly licensed. If you’re planning to drive out of the country, be sure to file for an international license which can be obtained at places like AAA. Most car rental places will require you to have an international license to drive a car in a different country.
Know Your Speed Limits
In order to ensure a safe experience for you and everyone around you on the road, be sure to make yourself aware of the different speed limits on both urban and country roads as well as the highway. Speed limits are listed in kilometers per hour, so if your country does not use the metric system, be sure to brush up on your conversions! For example, 80km/h is equal to about 50mph.
Don’t Drink and Drive
You’ll surely want to have a pint or two of Guiness when you’re visiting Ireland, but make sure you don’t get behind the wheel when you do. Of course, drinking and driving is never safe for anyone, you or the people around you, and Irish police are cracking down and issuing hefty fines for anyone caught driving under the influence.
Drive on the Left Side
Unlike America, Irish drivers drive on the left side of the road. This can be disorienting for US or Canadian drivers, so be sure to practice before you get behind the wheel!
