What To Look For Before Driving Off The Lot

When you rent a vehicle, the sales agent will most likely do a walk-around before you drive off with their vehicle. He or she will take note of any existing scratches, dents and dings. But, because you’ll be the one held responsible for anything other than normal wear and tear, it’s important to participate in this walk-around. What if they missed something and you just signed off on a “spotless vehicle?”

Here’s what to look for:

• Check the interior upholstery (front and back) for wear and tear, scratches, stains, tears or burns. • Check the tires for any nails or tears in the rubber. Also be sure that they are fully inflated. • Check the entire vehicle’s paint job. Are there any scratches or chips? • Check for any dents or dings to the bumpers.

• Make sure all mirrors (inside and out) are appropriately secured.

If you find anything, make sure it is noted (and signed or initialed) in the contact before driving off. This will help to prevent any unexpected charges upon returning the vehicle!

It’s also not a bad idea to take a picture of the vehicle when you receive it with your camera or phone. In addition to assisting with damage claims, a picture can also help you locate your vehicle in a crowded parking lot or airport if you are in a rush and forget what the vehicle you rented looks like! Don’t be embarrassed; this happens often!
